College of Physicians and Surgeons Refuses to Communicate with NSMoms
As is well known, far too many mothers in Nova Scotia have lost loved children, losses that they believe caused at least in part by the refusal of clinicians in Nova Scotia to accept urgent information from mothers.
In the previous 6 months Dr. Gus Grant has refused 3 times in writing, the NSMoms offer, to work together with CSPNS to create a pamphlet to help Mothers better understand how best to present critically important information to the physicians treating their adult children suffering from serious mental illnesses. NSMoms are currently collaborating with several key colleges, individual physicians and other stakeholders in Nova Scotia and are developing with them tools to improve communications. Technically, Mothers’ legal advisors state that physicians are currently practicing with an inadequate or incomplete understanding of the NS PHIA, and professional standards, unnecessarily risking the health, safety and life of Nova Scotians. This is putting physicians at risk of charges of malpractice or negligence by refusing to ensure adequate communication between caregiving mothers and members of the CPSNS.
In short, Dr. Gus Grant informs NSMoms “we [the CSPNS] are bound to ensure registrants are in alignment with legislation and with the standards of the profession”, yet refuses to discuss with us how best to produce a pamphlet informing such a necessary and clear understanding of the legislation and standards to harmed Mothers. Dr. Gus Grant, in fact, does not seem to believe that mothers’ tragic outcomes are an issue of concern for the CSPNS.
NSMoms remain a ready partner to assist the College in ensuring that "confidentiality" is no longer used as a shield to justify the exclusion of families—an exclusion that continues weekly in Nova Scotia to lead to preventable tragedies.
